About The Mazi Project
The Mazi Project empowers marginalised young people—many excluded from traditional education or employment—through food-based programmes that promote social mobility, wellbeing, and opportunity. From our aMAZIng recipe kits to cooking workshops, we use food as a tool to reduce isolation, build confidence, and help young people feel cared for and extraordinary.
At a time of growth, we are strengthening our governance and financial oversight. With an ambitious vision and expanding operations, we are seeking a Treasurer to provide expertise, guidance, and scrutiny to ensure robust financial management, compliance, and long-term sustainability.
The Role
The Treasurer will play a key role in overseeing the financial health of The Mazi Project. Working closely with the CEO, Chair, board, and our volunteer Finance Assistant, you will ensure that effective systems are in place to deliver timely management information, meet statutory compliance requirements, and support future business planning.
This role is not about day-to-day bookkeeping—it is about ensuring the charity’s finances are well managed, risks are understood, and the board is able to make informed decisions based on accurate financial information. It will however require somebody who is happy to ‘get their hands dirty’ with the numbers, while we continue to improve our processes and systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Oversight: Ensure proper financial records, systems, and controls are in place, working with the Finance Assistant and CEO.
- Compliance: Monitor that the charity complies with legal, regulatory, and reporting requirements, including Charity Commission and Companies House obligations.
- Budgeting & Planning: Support the development of annual budgets and longer-term financial plans, ensuring alignment with the charity’s strategy and ambitions.
- Management Information: Ensure the board receives clear, timely, and accurate financial information to support decision-making.
- Risk Management: Identify and advise on financial risks, helping the board take preventative and proportionate action.
- Support & Challenge: Provide guidance to the CEO and team on financial matters, while constructively challenging assumptions to ensure financial resilience.
- Governance: Fulfil the responsibilities of a trustee, acting in the best interests of The Mazi Project at all times.
Person Specification
- Has a background in finance, accounting, or financial management (e.g. qualified accountant, finance manager, or equivalent experience).
- Understands charity finance, compliance, and governance (experience with small charities desirable).
- Can analyse financial information and communicate it clearly to a non-financial audience.
- Is able to use their established network to help raise the profile of The Mzi Project.
- Is comfortable supporting and working alongside a small operational team and volunteer Finance Assistant.
- Shares The Mazi Project’s mission, values, and commitment to empowering marginalised young people through food.
- Can think strategically, with the ability to balance ambition and financial prudence in a growing organisation.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to shape and safeguard the financial sustainability of a growing, values-led organisation.
- A chance to make a direct impact on the lives of marginalised young people in Bristol and beyond.
- Collaboration with a dedicated board, team, and volunteers committed to food equality and youth empowerment.
- The satisfaction of knowing your skills are helping to create long-term change.
