TOG Knives x The MAZI Project: A Black Friday Partnership with Purpose

TOG Knives x The MAZI Project

We are super excited to be working with TOG Knives this Black Friday during their ‘Twin Campaign’, giving their customers access to their knives at a reduced price whilst also raising funds for The MAZI Project.

Last year, TOG Knives raised over £2,500 in just two weeks and donated their beautiful chopping board and knife for our education programmes! They are truly something special!

Following their success, they are now running the campaign for a whole month and we are super excited to be their chosen charity partner. We asked, TOG founder Bert about the partnership.

Why have you chosen The MAZI Project for your Black Friday campaign?

TOG is a brand built around food, we provide the best products we can for preparing food. We understand the importance of food and believe in promoting good quality, healthy and sustainable food too. As a business we also want to have a positive impact on the world and supporting MAZI certainly helps us achieve that via your work in education, inspiration and fighting food poverty. On top of that, you’re ten minutes away from TOG HQ and it’s always great to work with inspiring local organisations!

How did you first hear about MAZI?

We first heard about MAZI in 2023 when we discovered your aMAZIng meal kits and saw you were working with some of our favourite local chefs in Bristol, including Josh Eggleton.

Why do you think it’s important that young people have access to healthy and nourishing food?

Oh, gosh, so many reasons:

  1. On a fundamental level, we all need enough food to survive. It sounds obvious but food poverty is on a terrible trajectory in Britain with 6% of children living in a household that used a food bank in 2022/23. Food and non-alcoholic drink prices were up by 19.1% in the 12 months to March 2023. These are shocking stats in a country in the “first world”.
  2. We have a worsening health crisis in the developed world, driven by corporate interests – making food cheaply by sacrificing its health benefits and nutrition. The Health Survey for England 2021 found that almost three quarters of people aged 45-74 in England over overweight or obese and of course young people are shaped (and fed) by older people. 28% of 16-24 year olds were overweight or obese already. Again, it sounds obvious but if you don’t have healthy food then you won’t be healthy – lots of people simply don’t make this connection in their minds.
  3. Healthy and nourishing food makes us FEEL good. Mental health seems like it’s at an all-time low right now and the impact on that of eating well is just as important as on our physical health.

A simple one but a goodie, why is cooking important?

Again, a number of reasons!

  1. It is an important life skill to be able to look after and feed yourself and your family and not be dependent on others.
  2. Those who cook themselves generally consume healthier, less processed food and are therefore healthier.
  3. Cooking for others can be a great pleasure in terms of love, giving and pride but also socially.
  4. Cooking for yourself can also be a great pleasure – the ceremony of mindful food preparation, the smells and sounds, the creative act and rapid reward in the form of a tasty and healthy meal.

If you could include a recipe in our aMAZIng meal kits, what would it be and why?

I think Indian dal. I didn’t appreciate this dish until later in life but it’s an absolute staple in India because it’s SO tasty at the same time as being incredibly cheap and easy to make – and healthy!. We probably eat it once a week in our house and it can easily be batch cooked and frozen to save time.

We are super excited to be working with TOG Knives and the wonderful team! Big thank you to all and make sure you go and get yourself the best kitchen tool you will ever get!!!
